There are truths that come from scriptures.
And then there are truths that arise from the everyday life.
Life reveals the truth to us in so many ways. Often through daily simple incidents. But we ignore these simple truths and focus on complicated appearances.
This series is a collation of snippets from everyday life, subtly revealing the truth. These act as gentle reminders to learn from life, daily.
1. The Gift
Mother: “I have kept a surprise gift in your room. But you need to clear your room to find it.”
Child excited about the surprise starts cleaning the room.
After a while the child comes to the mother and says, “Mother I cleaned my room, but I did not find the surprise gift?”
Mother takes the child to the room and pointing towards the clean and tidy room says,
“This is the gift!”
Simple Truth: Enlightenment is the Gift you get once the clutter of ego, desires, thoughts, expectations is cleared.
2. The Search
A man was reading a book wearing his reading glasses.
The doorbell rang, and he got up to attend to it.
He slid his reading glasses onto his forehead and opened the door.
After attending to the visitor, he came back to his chair to continue reading.
But he couldn’t find his reading glasses.
He looked everywhere for them but couldn’t find them.
Tired, he dropped into his chair with a heavy sigh.
That sudden movement caused the glasses to slide from his forehead onto his nose.
And that’s when he realised — the glasses were never lost, they were always with him.
He had just forgotten where they were.
Simple Truth: The search ends, when you realise the Truth was always present.
3. The Game
In a game of musical chairs, a woman was participating enthusiastically.
She ran fast and grabbed the chair at every opportunity. She got so engrossed in the game, that she felt dejected when she did not get the chair.
But when she stood outside and saw others running for the chair, she did not feel disappointment anymore.
That’s when she realised, it was just a game, but she took it too seriously while playing it.
Simple Truth: The game of life, makes us run in circles.
Only when we step outside, we realise, it was not worth the struggle.
4. The Chase
A man was trying catch a hen. He kept running after it, chasing it from one corner to another. But the hen would always escape and run away.
Tired, the man just sat down. As he sat, some grains from his pocket accidentally fell on the ground. Seeing that the hen slowly but cautiously walked towards the grains.
The man saw this and stayed still allowing the hen to come close. As soon as the hen tried to pick the grains, the man grabbed the hen with both his hands.
Simple Truth: The mind keeps running away. Chasing it is futile. Stay still and offer it a reward. That’s how it will start listening to you.
5. The Face-Off
A man was riding a bicycle. A stray dog suddenly started chasing the man, barking at him.
Initially the man tried to escape the dog by cycling faster. But the dog kept chasing, barking aggressively at the man.
The man then stopped and got off from his bicycle. The dog too stopped running and barking. The dog was now looking at the man with a docile look. All the aggression had suddenly vanished.
The man looking at this sudden change of behaviour took a step closer to the dog. But the dog ran away at that moment.
Simple Truth: The ego keeps barking, “I am this”, “I am that”. But when you confront it, it runs away scared.
6. The Child
A little girl went to a park with her father.
In the park there was a dog, a homeless man and a ice-cream vendor
The father sensed threat from the dog, thinking it might attack.
Got irritated with the homeless, thinking he was creating a mess.
Irked at the ice-cream vendor, thinking he was selling bad quality.
The little girl saw, the dog hungry and searching for food.
The homeless man trying to build a shelter.
The ice-cream vendor trying to make a living.
What the man saw through his conditioned mind,
The little girl saw only through her eyes.
Simple Truth: The conditioned mind takes away our innocence. Our ability to see things as they are. Be a Child. See the world as it is.
7. The Instrument
A woman bought a new air fryer for her home.
She cooked few dishes in it.
At dinner, her family praised the dishes and asked how did she make these.
The woman told that she cooked in the air fryer.
Everyone praised the air fryer on how well the food was cooked.
But they forgot to praise the woman who cooked the dishes.
Simple Truth: The instrument often gets all the attention over the doer. God is the doer. We are mere instruments.
8. The Painting
An artist made a painting.
He looked at the painting and felt something was missing.
His wife looked at the painting and exclaimed, “Wow! That’s a beautiful painting.”
His children clapped for him.
But he was somehow not happy.
He started correcting the portions of the painting.
He kept correcting for a long time, until he realised that the painting was perfect with the imperfections.
Simple Truth: We try to correct a lot of things in our life. But when we accept, instead of correcting, we find peace.
9. The Wait
In a game of cricket, a batter was padded up and waiting in the dressing room for his turn.
While waiting he was watching every ball, every field change. Analysing the game.
To the spectators he appeared to be just whiling away his time.
But inside, he was mentally preparing himself for his turn when it comes.
Simple Truth: Life tests us with patience. Do you wait with disappointment, or prepare mentally for your turn? That decides who will win.
10. The Surgeon
A renowned surgeon once was faced with a dilemma.
His daughter had met with an accident and needed urgent surgery.
It was a complicated case and every other doctor told him, “You are the only one skilled enough.”
Reluctantly he entered the operation theatre.
At first, he saw his daughter and his hands trembled.
But when, he saw just a patient, his hands became steady.
The Surgeon saved his daughter’s life and gave his Soul a new life.
Simple Truth: Attachment deludes us. When we learn to detach, we perform our duty perfectly.
Are you learning from life every day?
